Philadelphia Tutor Profile: English major at UPenn

Tutor Profile
Sophomore at UPenn with a 3.50 GPA
Majoring in English

Gender:
Female

Preferred Subjects
Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Spanish, English (Writing), SAT, and SAT Math

Experience:

I have experience tutoring students in a wide range of age groups and from a wide range of backgrounds. In high school, I volunteered at a local elementary school (in Marietta, Georgia) tutoring first, second, and fourth graders in math. I also tutored my peer high school students in Spanish, Chemistry, and Algebra. Meanwhile, I privately tutored a nine-year-old girl in basic Hebrew reading skills. This summer, I worked as a TA at the Shaw Beacon summer camp, helping rising third and fourth grade students with basic writing skills and teaching newspaper writing to rising third, fourth, and fifth grade students.

I achieved a 2310 on my SAT I: 780 writing, 780 math, and 750 verbal. I received 4s and 5s on AP Spanish Literature, AP English Literature, AP English Language, AP United States Government and Politics, AP Calculus BC, AP United States History, AP Chemistry, AP World History, and AP Human Geography. I also received a 780 on my SAT II: Chemistry and a 750 on my SAT II: United States History.

I plan to major in English with a concentration in creative writing. I write for The Daily Pennsylvanian, the University of Pennsylvania's independent, student newspaper, and this summer, I was a news editor for The Summer Pennsylvanian, a weekly version of the DP. However, I also am good at and enjoy algebra-based math. My first semester at Penn, I received an A in Calculus I. I also recently completed sixth semester Spanish at Penn and will probably end up with a minor in Hispanic Studies.

I am a patient tutor, ready and willing to explain a concept a third way if the first and second didn't quite click with the student. I love working with kids of all ages, and my primary goal for every student I work with is to help him or her succeed.

Hobbies:

I enjoy reading, writing, singing, and playing tennis, although I don't play for Penn.

Hourly Rate:
$25.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekends at any time
Tues/Thurs in the morning
Friday after 12 Noon

Lives Near:
19104 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

Philadelphia Tutor Profile: Mathematics major at UPenn

Tutor Profile
Junior at UPenn with a 3.65 GPA
Majoring in Mathematics

Gender:
Male

Preferred Subjects
Calculus, SAT Math, Trigonometry, Algebra, Geometry, General Math, and Differential Equations

Experience:

I have tutored geometry, algebra II, pre-calculus, and algebra I in the past. I am qualified to tutor calculus and other advanced math as well. In high school I scored a 790 on the math SAT II level C test. My strengths are that I have tutored many of these subjects in the past (for a tutoring company based out of Potomac, Maryland called Peer2Peer tutors, as well as on my own for neighborhood students), and I feel that I am very good with math. I really enjoy tutoring, and as a math student I feel that it is a rewarding experience for both the tutor and the student. I'm majoring in math, so in my first two years of college I have taken, and kept extensive notes of the following courses:
Math 114: Multivariable Calculus
Math 202: Introduction to Analysis
Math 240:Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations
Math 241: Fourier Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Complex Analysis
Math 360/361: Advanced Calculus/ Real Analysis
Math 370: Abstract Algebra
Math 350: Elementary Number theory
Much of this material is familiar because I have covered it in the last two years, but I am also quite familiar with the basics as well. This is because I have recently tutored young students in basic topics, and because you cannot learn advanced math topics without a good understanding of the basics.
Last summer, I interned at the National Institutes of Health where I worked along side medical researchers. As a mathematics intern, I used linear differential equations to model complex biological systems. This summer, I will be working along side Professor Peter Storm of University of Pennsylvania. We will be exploring an area of math known as differential geometry.

Hobbies:

I am on the track team here at the University of Pennsylvania so I enjoy running and exercise a lot. I think it's really a great way to clear your head and relieve stress. Also, I love sports and spending time with friends and my four younger brothers.

Hourly Rate:
$35.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays after 2PM

Lives Near:
19104 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

I'm currently a chemical engineering student at UPenn, which means I have a bit of experiences with math and the sciences. I have tutored both algebra and precalculus in the past, both with much success (both students were able to raise their grades to an A). I got a 1460 on the SATs (800 math, 760 verbal). 5's in AP biology, calculus, US history, psychology, chemistry and English. I'm currently taking many in-depth chemical engineering courses that require my knowledge of calculus and differential equations and i work in a neuroscience lab on campus.

Hobbies:

In my free time i enjoy various crafts, knitting, biking, martial arts, and observing the world around me.

Hourly Rate:
$30.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays after 4PM

Lives Near:
19104 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

When I was barely five, my dad would sit down with me and teach me math or talk to me about science. Thus, I've always been a little bit ahead of my classmates in certain subject areas, and I've always been more than happy to help my friends with their homework or to understand a particularly difficult concept. I'm one of the few kids I know that actually enjoys peer-editing papers, and I really enjoy tutoring.
I've always excelled academically and at taking standardized tests. I got a 2310 on the SATs the first and only time I took them (800 verbal, 790 Writing, 720 Math). I also earned 5's or 4's on all of the AP exams I took in high school (5's on the AP BC Calculus (junior year), AP Physics C (Mechanics), AP Spanish Language (junior year), AP English Literature, and AP US History exams (junior year), and 4's on AP Physics C (E+M), AP English Language (junior year), and AP Spanish Literature).
My career as a tutor officially began in high school. For three years, I would volunteer to teach Math, Spanish, and Physics to younger students, some of whom I knew, and some of whom I met through my school's Learning Center, which set up tutoring appointments. My Senior year, I became a 'walk-in' tutor, in which I would answer any questions about any discipline. I was also an editor of my school's newspaper, where I was able to help younger students improve their journalistic writing skills. I've never been one to blindly accept what my teachers tell me, but I would always challenge them whenever I didn't think something made sense. This has given me a deep understanding of many subjects, I am able to communicate hard concepts in many varied and original ways.
I also have extensive experience as a performer, which lends itself to tutoring because I am good at keeping my tutees interested and engaged. I have acted in about 40 plays since middle school, lead many workshops and club meetings on improvisation, and lately I've turned to directing plays and musicals. These experiences, directing especially, have helped me hone my communication skills and made me a better teacher.
I'm currently undecided about a major, but this is mostly because I love too many academic disciplines to be able pick just one so early in my college career. I particularly enjoy foreign languages (having already taken many years of Spanish, I decided to learn Chinese while at Penn), history, and math.

Hobbies:

I'm the social chair of Quadramics (student-run theatre company), I write for the Daily Pennsylvanian, and I like to cook, hike, act, direct, play tennis, go to concerts, watch movies, and make movies.

Hourly Rate:
$25.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Tues/Thurs in the morning
Weekends after 12 Noon
Mon/Wed/Fri after 2PM

Lives Near:
06777 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor
