| Experience: | From a very early age, my parents encouraged me to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible. When I was barely five, my dad would sit down with me and teach me math or talk to me about science. Thus, I've always been a little bit ahead of my classmates in certain subject areas, and I've always been more than happy to help my friends with their homework or to understand a particularly difficult concept. I'm one of the few kids I know that actually enjoys peer-editing papers, and I really enjoy tutoring.
I've always excelled academically and at taking standardized tests. I got a 2310 on the SATs the first and only time I took them (800 verbal, 790 Writing, 720 Math). I also earned 5's or 4's on all of the AP exams I took in high school (5's on the AP BC Calculus (junior year), AP Physics C (Mechanics), AP Spanish Language (junior year), AP English Literature, and AP US History exams (junior year), and 4's on AP Physics C (E+M), AP English Language (junior year), and AP Spanish Literature).
My career as a tutor officially began in high school. For three years, I would volunteer to teach Math, Spanish, and Physics to younger students, some of whom I knew, and some of whom I met through my school's Learning Center, which set up tutoring appointments. My Senior year, I became a 'walk-in' tutor, in which I would answer any questions about any discipline. I was also an editor of my school's newspaper, where I was able to help younger students improve their journalistic writing skills. I've never been one to blindly accept what my teachers tell me, but I would always challenge them whenever I didn't think something made sense. This has given me a deep understanding of many subjects, I am able to communicate hard concepts in many varied and original ways.
I also have extensive experience as a performer, which lends itself to tutoring because I am good at keeping my tutees interested and engaged. I have acted in about 40 plays since middle school, lead many workshops and club meetings on improvisation, and lately I've turned to directing plays and musicals. These experiences, directing especially, have helped me hone my communication skills and made me a better teacher.
I'm currently undecided about a major, but this is mostly because I love too many academic disciplines to be able pick just one so early in my college career. I particularly enjoy foreign languages (having already taken many years of Spanish, I decided to learn Chinese while at Penn), history, and math. |
| Hobbies: | I'm the social chair of Quadramics (student-run theatre company), I write for the Daily Pennsylvanian, and I like to cook, hike, act, direct, play tennis, go to concerts, watch movies, and make movies. |
